School Bio Gas Kits

The school biogas kits seen below are in no way connected or associated with our site and are listed to assist people searching for ideas in the classroom.

Target Grade: 8-14

BiogasSchoolKit

Available from Science Lab Supplies (Florida, USA). Create natural bio-renewable energy using readily available organic waste materials with these school biogas kits. Biogas can power engines, generate electricity, cook food, and heat homes. This kit includes a biogas digester, a 1-gallon biogas collection bag, all necessary fittings and tubing, a check valve, a combustion nozzle assembly, and safety equipment for one person (goggles, gloves, and apron). Vary the biomass source and digestion temperature, and you have a variety of comparative experiments to analyse.

Kit Contains 5/16 inch Brass Barbed Fitting; 1/4 inch Nylon Check Valve; 90 deg 3/8 inch Barbed Nylon Elbow; Medline Drainage Bag, 4 L; Jar with screw cap, 4L; Box 8 x 8 x 12, 44 ECT C Flute; Safety Impact Goggles; Lab Apron; and Nitrile Gloves, two pairs.

The TK-BIOGAS school biogas kits are available from Kemtec (Pennsylvania, USA). This kit includes a biogas digester, a one-gallon biogas collection bag, all necessary fittings and tubing, a check valve, a combustion nozzle assembly, and safety equipment for one person (goggles, gloves, and apron)—gas production in about three to five days. Vary the biomass source and digestion temperature; you have various comparative experiments to analyse.  Rabbit manure works well.

Lessons and Downloads

Activity 1A – Biogas generator In this activity, students design and construct a biogas generator from household materials. Collect the gas produced over several weeks and test it.  Biogas generators can be built from household materials such as fizzy drinks bottles and the gas burnt using a Bunsen burner.  A list of possible materials is provided in the lesson.  The more comprehensive the range of materials you can provide, the more creative students can be.

Activity 4C Bioenergy Crosswords are provided for use at various educational levels. Primary, Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4 and Post-16. The crosswords cover vocabulary and concepts associated with bioenergy research that students are expected to be familiar with at the educational level specified.

Biogas Lesson Grade 10-12 Biology Lab, Agri Science Resources for High School Sciences.

Biogas: A Source of Energy for Grades 3 & 4, Heifer International. Objectives: Analyze the importance of energy and how they use energy in their lives. Describe the difference between renewable and non–renewable sources of energy. Experiment with creating and capturing biogas.

Biogas Generator Provided by NREL, America. Grade Level: Middle School (6-8), Small groups (3 to 4) Time: 90 minutes to assemble, days to generate sufficient gas to burn. This demonstrates the small amount of technology needed to create a renewable energy source.

Build Your Own Biogas Generator Grades 9-12, A Renewable Energy Project Kit by the Pembina Institute. For the first few weeks, your school biogas kits will produce mainly carbon dioxide. When the aerobic bacteria use up all the oxygen inside the bottle, the anaerobic bacteria, which make methane, can take over. It can take up to a month for the generator to start making biogas with enough methane to be flammable.722Kb

From Waste to Energy: Thanks to Methane, ChemMatters, High School teacher’s guide and lesson plan.

Methane Biogas Production 497Kb Simple lab experiments.

Practical Biofuel Activities for School Engagement and Outreach, from the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC). This guide will enable you to communicate and engage young people with scientific principles and research in bioenergy and biofuels through outreach activities.

Science Activities in Biomass – Provided by NREL, America. Curriculum: Biomass Power (organic chemistry, genetics, distillation, agriculture, chemical/carbon cycles, climatology, plants and energy resources/transformations). Grade Level: Elementary School grades 4, 5, 6. Whole class or small groups (3 to 4). Time:  Activities range from 2 to 15 class periods, depending on abilities of students.
